Congratulations to St. Matthew on earning a Gold Healthy School certification from OPHEA!

In November and December of 2021, members of the St. Matthew school community participated in a survey to identify how students are getting to school, the routes they take, and the barriers they face along the way.

On June 2, members of student council walked the main routes to school to identify locations for Wayfinding Signs, which will be installed in the fall of 2022.

Every Wednesday in June, students at St. Matthew were encouraged to use active transportation to get to school. 70% of the school population walked to school on Wednesdays, and 13% of students said they walked to school for the first time this month!

Transportation Profile

St. Matthew is a Catholic Elementary School located in Binbrook, which is in Hamilton’s ward 11. According to data from the HWCDSB, there are 611 students who attend St. Matthew from grades JK-8. 87% are within walking distance, 7% are bussed to school, and 6% are out of catchment; however, due to many different reasons, some students are driven to school in private vehicles. This is the case in every school across the City.

Our goal is to get 100% of students who live within 1.6km to walk or wheel to school on a daily basis. When we surveyed the community, we learned that 91% of students live within 1.6km from school, and that 57% of students usually walk or wheel to school. We would like to see this number go from 57% to 91%.

School begins at 9:15 and students are dismissed at 3:35.
