In November and December of 2021, members of the St. Joseph school community participated in a survey to identify how students are getting to school, the routes they take, and the barriers they face along the way. Below are the results of the survey which include:

  • Footprint map: This map shows all of the routes that were submitted in the survey
  • Infographic: The infographic is a summary of responses from the community. Percentages shown indicate proportion of respondents.

Next steps will be based on action planning with the school community. Stay tuned for more details!

Transportation Profile

St. Joseph is a Catholic Elementary School located in the Kirkendall neighbourhood in Hamilton’s ward 1. According to data from the HWCDSB, there are 414 students who attend St. Joseph from grades JK-8. 42% are within walking distance, 47% are bussed to school, and 11% are out of catchment; however, due to many different reasons, some students are driven to school in private vehicles. This is the case in every school across the City.

Our goal is to get 100% of students who live within 1.6km to walk or wheel to school on a daily basis. When we surveyed the community, we learned that 57% of students live within 1.6km from school, and that 53% of students usually walk or wheel to school. We would like to see this number go from 53% to 57%.

School begins at 9:15 and students are dismissed at 3:35.
