St. David is a Catholic Elementary School located in the  Greenford neighbourhood in Hamilton’s ward 5. According to data from the HWCDSB, there are 412 students who attend St. David from grades JK-8. 38% are within walking distance, 47% are bussed to school, and 15% are out of catchment; however, due to many different reasons, some students are driven to school in private vehicles. This is the case in every school across the City.

Our goal is to get 100% of students who live within 1.6km to walk or wheel to school on a daily basis. When we surveyed the community, we learned that 44% of students live within 1.6km from school, and that 34% of students usually walk or wheel to school. We would like to see this number go from 34% to 44%.

Here's what's happening at St. David CES

2022-2023 School Year

This school year, the St. David CES Health Action Team has identified physical activity and mental health as their indicators for a healthy school. To help achieve this, they will be focusing on active school travel as one of their main initiatives. Here are their current activities:

  • Poster making and announcements to spread awareness
  • Walking Wednesdays to incentivize the walk to school
  • Wayfinding signs to support safe school travel by designating Student Streets on the landscape.

Past activities

In November and December of 2021, members of the St. David school community participated in a survey to identify how students are getting to school, the routes they take, and the barriers they face along the way. Below are the results of the survey which include:

  • Footprint map: This map shows all of the routes that were submitted in the survey
  • Infographic: The infographic is a summary of responses from the community. Percentages shown indicate proportion of respondents.

Next steps will be based on action planning with the school community. Stay tuned for more details!
